BUTARE TOWN

Butare has the National University of Rwanda, which like all educational institutions in Rwanda is bilingual, speaking both French and English. It also held the prestigious Nyakibanda Seminary, the Rwandan National Institute of Scientific Research, the Ruhande Arboretum and a cathedral.

The city of Butare has long been regarded as the intellectual capital of the country, while Kigali holds most political power.
The National Museum of Rwanda was built in the early 1990s and is a good source of information on the cultural history of the country and the region. It is often referred to in tourist brochures as the finest museum in East Africa.

From 2006, some sources refer to the city as Huye, after the surrounding district, but most Rwandans continue to use the name Butare.

Today the site of several academic institutions, including the country's largest university,Huye ( Butare) is still regarded to  be the intellectual and cultural pulse of Rwanda. It is also an attractively compact and sedate town of shady avenues emanating from a main street lined with comfortable small hotels and breezy terrace restaurants.
The most prominent tourist attraction in Huye (Butare) is the superb National Museum, which houses perhaps the finest ethnographic collection in East Africa.
When you get in Butare town, you meet old buildings constructed by colonialists and missionaries, nowdays there is some innovation.
Goods at Butare market are also expensive because there are many clients including students of National Universty of Rwanda.
